The Joyce L. Maul Foundation
Our Founder, Mekael L. Shane was born on October 17th, 1970 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended Park Tudor School. After graduating from high school, Mekael went on to attend Central State University in Ohio, where he pursued a degree in Political Science. Upon his departure from CSU, Mekael returned home to Indianapolis where he then went to work for Project IMPACT - Indianapolis, a non-profit organization that works to provide services for at-risk youth and their families. Mekael served his country as a member of the U. S. Army, where he received accommodations for leadership and excellence.
Mekael's past experiences coupled with each team member's desire to touch lives, helped us to create the JLM Foundation's mission which is to be an impactful community resource for providing early detection and screening services for cancer. In 2008 we had the honor of establishing the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s LIVESTRONG Army-Dunwoody. This guaranteed us the benefit of their support and experience, allowing us to strengthen our program as we endeavor to become a strong healthcare advocate in the city of Dunwoody, Georgia. Our community impact plan is to provide quarterly community events that we have termed “EDS Blitzes” (Early Detection and Screening Blitzes), where our focus is geared towards educating people about the various forms of screening and detection that are available to them. We have partnered with organizations such as area health clinics and hospitals to help with the facilitating of these events. Our “EDS Blitzes” are also fund raisers that are fun for the entire family, and 100% of the funds raised are re-directed back to the Lance Armstrong Foundation's LIVESTRONG Army - Dunwoody and its programs.
“With our mission being to heighten the level of awareness toward the fight against cancer, I was hit with the vision of drawing attention towards this battle by climbing the world's seven highest peaks, starting with Mt. Everest. Please visit our Mastering the Mountain page for more details about the expedition and Mt. Everest.” – Mekael L. Shane, Founder.
