The Joyce L. Maul Foundation
She once told my siblings and me, "It is your responsibility as human beings, to serve God, your nation, and your community," truths that were evident throughout her life, from her having worked for the Civil Rights Commission, and having been a soldier in the U.S. Army.
On November 3rd, 2005, Mom, during a follow-up appointment with her physician was informed that she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. At the end of that appointment, Mom asked one singular powerful question.
She asked, “How long do I have to fight for my life?” The Doctor doing his best not to appear solemn replied, "Three or four months at best.”
That day began an incredible journey for our family, one that would challenge us, and at the same time strengthen us.
After an intense five month battle, Mom lost her fight with cancer, but it was during her last week of life, that she said the words that would change my life forever. She said, "Promise me that you will join the fight against cancer.” My response was as simple as her request, "I promise to dedicate myself to this fight, Mom." Since then, I founded the JLM Foundation in honor of Mom’s incredible legacy, and to keep the promise I made to her before she passed." - Mekael L. Shane, Founder.
